OSC is a project by Fernando Kowarik that explores the relationship between movement and sound by integrating sensors into the diabolo and the handsticks. As the objects spin, fall and return to the string, they generate data that is translated into sound in real time.
I have known Fernando since 2008, when we first met at diabolo gatherings in Alicante. When he invited me to join the project, we agreed that my role would focus on artistic direction, providing an external perspective and supporting the sonic development of the process. Over time I also took on the technical development of the sensing system, based on CodeCell (ESP32-C6) boards housed inside the handsticks and diabolos. These boards transmit twelve movement variables over the network to Ableton Live, where a Max for Live device maps each gesture to a sound parameter.
The project feels particularly close to me because it follows a line of research that has long existed alongside my own artistic practice. In my work, sensors remain outside both the object and the body, and I build the relationship between movement and sound through camera tracking and visual processing. Here I accompany the opposite approach, and working from within the project allows me to engage with an investigation that shares many of the same questions while relying on different technical means.
